SCHIFFFAHRT | SHIPPING

SCHIFFFAHRT | SHIPPING Ferry S&P market recovering The global RoRo- and ferry fleet with its 7,362 vessels consists predominantly of ferries. The segment accounts for almost 92 % of the fleet in terms of number of vessels (6,768 ships). It is followed by the RoRo segment with 434 ships. RoLo and ConRo vessels are a rare kind counting 94 and 66 units respectively. Taking a look at the orderbook, the picture changes a bit, but not significantly. 210 ferries are on order whereas the RoRo segment is expecting 23 new vessels. RoLo and ConRo owners have ordered three and six new ships respectively. The Grimaldi Group ist the largest owner of RoRo ships in terms of number of vessels as well as in terms of fleet value (63 ships worth 3.23 bn $). Grimaldi is followed by Cobelfret (31 ships, 1.3 bn $) DFDS (20 ships, 759 mill. $) and Finnlines (15 ships, 648 mill. $). Interestingly, US owners Matson Navigation and Crowley Maritime both have very small RoRo fleets with a high value. Matson operates only four ships of this type worth 644 mill. $), Crowley operates just two RoRos worth 491 mill. $). Danish DFDS would easily come in second in this ranking if counted together with Turkish branch DFDS Denizcilik Ve Tasimacilik which operates a fleet of another 14 vessels valued at 552 mill. $. With over 17.500 islands, the state of Indonesia needs a lot of ferries – and thus leads the top ferry owner ranking with 288 ships. With its many fjords and islets, Norway is another natural candidate for teh top of the list. Norwegian owners Fjord1 (90 ships), Norled (83 ships) and Boreal Sjø make it on ranks zwo, three and four. The sale and purchase history shows a downward trend that, for ferries, started already in 2018 and continued in 2019 and 2020. The much smaller RoRo S&P market has naturally been less active but has been more volatile altogether. Interestingly, while to date the RoRo S&P market is set for a five year low with only eleven vessels sold to date, (we will have to see if it stays as slow until the end of the year), the ferry S&P market has recovered from its ten year low in 2020 with 47 vessels having been sold to date. in cooperation with RoRo & Ferry Live Fleet Number of Vessels RoRo & Ferry On Order Fleet Number of Vessels RoLo 94 RoRo 434 ConRo 66 RoLo 3 RoRo 23 ConRo 6 Ferry 6.768 Ferry 210 32 HANSA – International Maritime Journal 10 | 2021
