SMM SAFE INDUSTRIAL AUTOMATION Piening Propeller, Glückstadt © Piening Propeller At SMM Piening Propeller is demonstrating its PCP (Piening Controllable Propeller) with Water Hydraulics. Coming from the maintenance & service works on propeller hubs, Piening Propeller has developed a way of cost savings, combined with Green shipping. The use of biodegradable oil in Controllable Pitch Propellers can have the effect of attacking metals and resulting in a more rapid wear in between the components, which often ends in extensive welding and machining works on hub and blade carriers, as Piening has carried out for different customers on different brands of CPPs. The solution in the design of the Piening Controllable Propeller (PCP) includes the use of composite components in all highly stressed bearings. This eliminates the need for reconditioning of hubs and blade carriers, as only components need to be replaced. Additionally, it is no longer necessary to remove the hub completely to perform service work. Furthermore it is possible to use just water as hydraulic medium instead of oil, avoiding the risk of environmental pollution. This makes an amazing benefit for customers and the highlight is – to do something for the environment on the one hand and save money on the other. As for operational efficiency and minimal maintenance, the PCP9s blades are designed for simplified assembly and disassembly. Made of identical components for left- and rightturning propellers, thus reducing the number of different parts that the user must work with and remember. PCP diameters will therefore vary in size – anywhere between 1.1m and 5.4m – and power – spanning a band of 300–10,000kW, depending on application and customer requirements.
