SMM © VDR Martin Kröger Chief Executive Officer German Shipowners’ Association VDR The lifeblood of global commerce The German shipowning community eagerly anticipates the upcoming SMM fair in September, where the maritime world will convene in Hamburg to discuss the myriad challenges facing the maritime and shipping industries. The SMM is not merely a gathering but a vital forum for exchange, innovation, and cooperation, essential for navigating the complexities of our global trade environment. Against this backdrop, we stand resolute in advocating for the preservation and expansion of open trade markets, free trade, freedom of navigation, and a competitive shipping market. Open trade markets are the lifeblood of global commerce. They facilitate the efficient exchange of goods, services, and technologies across borders, fostering economic growth and innovation. For the German shipping industry, open trade markets ensure access to diverse markets and resources, enhancing our ability to compete on a global scale. Protectionist policies would stifle this flow, leading to higher costs, reduced market access, and ultimately a decline in economic prosperity. The German merchant fleet thrives on its ability to navigate international waters freely and engage in trade without restrictive barriers. By maintaining open trade markets, we can continue to drive economic growth, ensure supply security for our population, and support the energy transition. The global shipping network is interdependent; any disruption in one region can have far-reaching consequences worldwide. Therefore, it is in our best interest to advocate for policies that promote open and fair trade. Free trade and freedom of navigation are not just economic imperatives; they are pillars of global stability and security. In a world increasingly fraught with geopolitical tensions, ensuring the security of sea routes is paramount. The war in Ukraine, attacks by Huthi rebels in the Red Sea, and tensions in the South China Sea underscore the vulnerabilities faced by the shipping industry. These conflicts highlight the need for diplomatic efforts and international cooperation to maintain free and secure navigation routes. The international community must work together to safeguard these vital corridors, which are essential for the free flow of global trade. Any disruption in these routes can have severe implications for global supply chains, affecting economies and societies worldwide. By supporting freedom of navigation, we can mitigate these risks and ensure the continued prosperity of global trade. A competitive shipping market is essential for fostering innovation, improving efficiency, and reducing costs. It encourages shipping companies to adopt the latest technologies and best practices, contributing to the overall advancement of the industry. The inclusion of shipping in the EU Emissions Trading System from 2024 is a step towards climate-neutral shipping by 2050. However, it is crucial that the federal government provides clear framework conditions and promotes international uniformity to avoid competitive distortions. In conclusion, the German shipping industry stands at a crossroads. We must reject the temptations of protectionism and regional isolation and instead embrace globalization and the freedom of navigation. The SMM fair provides a unique opportunity to solidify these commitments. Our Association expects the SMM to foster valuable discussions, generate innovative ideas, and forge stronger connections within the global maritime community. By supporting open trade markets, free trade, and a competitive shipping market, we can ensure the continued strength and stability of our industry. Together, with commitment, innovation, and a clear course, we can navigate the challenges ahead and secure a prosperous future for German shipping. 38 HANSA – International Maritime Journal 09 | 2024
