SMM © VSM Reinhard Lüken Managing Director German Shipbuilding and Ocean Industries Association (VSM) Technological innovation: Shaping the future of shipbuilding In a rapidly evolving global landscape, the maritime industry is at the forefront of technological innovation. New technologies and digital transformation are driving profound changes in the way we design, build and operate ships. From automation and artificial intelligence to advanced materials and sustainable energy solutions, the future of shipbuilding is being redefined. This future raises questions. And you will find many of the answers at SMM. A major theme this year, for example, is sustainability. Green technologies, such as alternative fuels and energy efficient designs, are crucial to achieving our environmental goals. The exchange of views and discussions will accelerate the transition to greener shipping. Digitalisation is another important focus. Smart ships and digital technologies improve operational efficiency and safety and open up many opportunities for innovation. The geopolitical situation also has an impact on the shipping industry. Rising tensions and security concerns call for vigilance and resilience. At SMM we will explore the latest maritime security and defence technologies to protect our countries and businesses. Through it all, the human element remains a cornerstone of our industry9s performance and sustainability. Investing in the education and training of our workforce is essential. The fascinating diversity of the maritime industry is also reflected in the range of training opportunities and job profiles that young people can find out about at SMM. I would like to extend a warm welcome to all participants. Let9s take this great opportunity to explore new horizons and work together towards a sustainable, safe and prosperous maritime future. The innovations and solutions we develop here will set the course for the next generation of excellence in shipbuilding. I am looking forward to a successful and inspiring SMM! 36 HANSA – International Maritime Journal 09 | 2024
