SMM © VDMA Marine Equipment and Systems Jörg Mutschler Managing Director VDMA Marine Equipment and Systems Advancing maritime economy and shipping logistics As VDMA, we are once again looking forward to the world9s leading trade fair SMM in 2024. We are looking forward to the discussions and exchanges with you, the visitors, exhibitors, politicians and representatives. We are convinced that the planned and especially the unplanned trade fair contacts only work in the present trade fair environment and, as a result, contribute to increasing the speed of innovation in the industry worldwide. Despite or perhaps precisely because of the ongoing geopolitical crises and uncertainties, it is necessary to advance the maritime economy and shipping logistics, as they are a prerequisite for increasing prosperity and global supply. Without the smooth exchange of capital goods and commodities, the global economy will stumble. The shipbuilding and offshore supply industry continues to bear a particularly large responsibility in this regard. Thanks to the maritime energy transition, new digital standards (Modul Type Package) and intelligent route planning, we are on the continuous path to a CO 2 -neutral and efficient transport chain at sea. The companies in the shipbuilding and offshore supply industry ensure the smooth technical availability of the transport units. Their expertise in construction and lifelong service guarantees this. Continuous contact and dialogue with shipowners and shipyards ensures the implementation of new requirements and digital possibilities. The necessary interfaces for the required energy generation are also provided by maritime mechanical engineering. The construction and operation of ever more powerful offshore wind turbines and the conversion of renewable energy into industrial Power2X applications are major challenges facing the industry. It is not without reason that the leading international trade fairs SMM 2024, WindEnergy 2024 and the Hydrogen-Technology-Expo 2024 are being held very close to each other here in Hamburg. With over 64,000 employees and a turnover of more than 11 billion euros, the German maritime supply industry continues to lead the world. Its success factors are customer proximity, continuous innovation, speed, reliability and quality. VDMA will also be actively promoting the industry9s most important technology topics at SMM 2024. The Digital&Security Stage will focus on urgently needed standardisation, the gmec Congress on future ship propulsion systems and the Career Forum on suitable young talent for our industry. The same applies to the VDMA joint stand (VDMA Marine Equipment and Systems, VDMA Engines and Systems, CIMAC) in Hall A1. There we would like to talk to you personally about the challenges and future topics of the shipbuilding and offshore supply industry. We look forward to your visit! 34 HANSA – International Maritime Journal 09 | 2024
