Schiffstechnik | Ship Technology Cruise Technology News ANTIFOULING Hempel coats »Silver Muse« from head to toe Cruise line operator Silversea has appointed coatings supplier Hempel to deliver innovative coating solutions for its newbuild 40,700 gt cruise ship »Silver Muse« that was built at the Fincantieri shipyard in Genoa Sestri Ponente and delivered in early April. It was vital for Silversea that the coating delivered fuel savings and minimised maintenance costs. Hempel used its fouling defence coating Hempaguard X7 to protect the hull of the new vessel. The product uses a combination of hydrogel-silicone and an effcient fouling preventing biocide in a single coat. This technology releases 95% less biocide than traditional antifoulings delivering enhanced environmental performance. A significant 6% fuel saving compared with best-in-class antifoulings over the entire docking interval maxi mises operational effciency. The effectiveness of Hempaguard X7 over an extended docking interval of up to 90 months helps minimise maintenance costs. Cruise ships operate unique trading patterns which involve a combination of slow and fast steaming as well as regular periods alongside. Hempaguard provides proven outstanding resistance to fou ling during idle periods of up to 120 days and retains its effectiveness at all passage speeds.« Application of the entire coating system on the hull took just four days. M Photo: Hempel ABB Software saves fuel on Stena Line vessel An upgraded vessel control software package from ABB is delivering the measurable operational effciency gains promised to Stena Line for the freight ferry »Stena Scotia« within one month of commissioning. The DEGO IV advanced speed governor and actuation system onboard has been enhanced so that control over the vessel’s propulsion system minimizes roll and rudder movements, delivering a new way of saving fuel while also improving crew comfort, ABB said in a statement. In an advance on previous versions, DEGO IV uses this data to model a control strategy to minimize ship roll, adjusting to changing sea or ship conditions by simulating the next two roll periods to optimize roll damping against fuel consumption on a predictive basis. The 120-trailer capacity, twin-propeller »Stena Scotia« is deployed in daily RoRo services between Rotterdam and Killingholme in the United Kingdom. Part of a broad range of energy optimization tools offered to the maritime industry by ABB, the effciency gains available using the DEGO system depend on ship type, sea conditions and the type of autopilot used. First installations of DEGO IV, made across ten vessels, indicate fuel saving potential in the range of 5 to 7%, with roll reduction between 20 to 40% and rudder reduction of 15 to 60%, ABB explained. In 2016, »Stena Scotia« hosted trials of the ABB torque monitoring system Torductor Marine, which measures propeller shaft performance to verify that ship performance is in line with the International Marine Organization’s Ship’s Energy Effciency Management Plan (SEEMP). Following a demonstration of its ability to quantify propulsion power, Specific Fuel Oil Consumption (SFOC), total number of shaft revolutions and the total amount of energy developed during a voyage, Stena Line entered a commercial arrangement to include Torductor Marine on the vessel. Schiffstechnik | Ship Technology ROLLS-ROYCE New Mystic Cruises ship gets hybrid propulsion Rolls-Royce has signed a deal with West- Sea Shipyard, part of Martifer Group, to equip a cruise ship newbuilding for Portugal-based cruise company Mystic Cruises. The vessel, to be called »World Explorer«, will be the company’s first expeditionary oceanic cruise ship. The »World Explorer« will offer cruise itineraries in Antarctica from November to March and this new vessel’s inaugural Antarctic season is already fully chartered to, and being distributed globally by, Polar Cruise Company Quark Expeditions. For the rest of the season it will visit small and distinct ports around the world normally not accessible to larger cruise ships and will be distributed worldwide by Nicko Cruises. Equipped with environmentally sustainable technology developed by Rolls- Royce, the »World Explorer« is the first of several ships to be built by the Portuguese company for its expeditionary cruise line. Rolls- Royce has supplied two Bergen, C25:33L8P main engines and a Bergen C25:33L6P auxiliary dual generator. These connect to a Low Voltage AFE SAVeCUBE Power Electric System which allows the engines to operate at variable speeds maximising their effciency for the required power. Rolls- Royce is also providing the automation and control system, and the complete Promas propulsion system with two CPP propellers integrated with two flap rudders, also steering gears and tunnel thrusters. The »World Explorer« will accommodate 200 guests and 111 crew members. »World Explorer« will also get a Promas system The ship will have an operating cruise speed of 16 kn with a strengthened hull and propellers for traversing ice. It will be 126 m in length with a width of 19 m, a draft of 4.8 m and a tonnage of 9,300 gt. Construction of the vessel, designed by Giuseppe Tringali, is already underway at the WestSea Shipyard in Portugal Completion expected in October 2018. The tank testing phase began in August at MARIN in the Netherlands. M Source: Mystic Cruises EXHAUST GAS CLEANING GE and Fincatieri co-develop emission control solution To reduce pollution in the marine industry, GE Power and Fincantieri have signed an agreement to co-develope a new emission control solution. The socalled Shipboard Pollutant Removal System is intended to help control emissions to be compliant with MARPOL’s more stringent emissions limits directive that will be effective by 2020. Fincantieri will define the necessary technical requirements to design an emission control system for a vessel, including constrains and improvements to develop a competitive product. GE Power, with one of the most comprehensive portfolio to treat all main industrial pollu tants for power and industry applications and 80 years of experience in environmental control solutions, will define the features that are necessary for an emission control system, to help meet the target performances. The new product to control SOx and particulates emissions is developed for cruise vessels but can be installed on all vessels using heavy fuel.
