FINANZIERUNG | FINANCING Car carriers: large capacity ahead The global vehicle carrier fleet is dominated by the PCTC segment (Pure Car and Truck Carrier) accounting for more than two thirds of the fleet with 641 ships – four of these on order. The LCTC segment (Large Car and Truck Carrier) with a length of over 200 m, higher ramp and deck capacity, comprises 134 units including 13 on order. The smallest segment are the PCCs (Pure Car Carrier) with 20 ships (including two on order). Interestingly, the fleet value picture shows that the PCTC fleet at a value of 13 bn $ is still dominant, but the LCTCs at a total value of 6.6 bn $ take a larger part of the pie. The capacity development since the 1970s is trending upwards with more and more ships in the 3,500 to 8,000 CEU classes. Regarding the development since 2015 and ahead into 2025, 6,000 to 8,000 CEU vessel capacity seem to be the new normal in the market. The S&P market has not seen much activity over the past twelve months. Siem Car Carriers has been the biggest spender in this period, spending 80.4 mill. $ on one vessel. Doriko purchased two ships for 16,5 mill. $ in total. Top sellers over the period were Volkswagen with one vessel sold for 80.4 mill. $. Looking at the vehicle carrier demand and supply balance, one can observe an articulated Covid-19 effect with live vessel numbers falling in the second half of 2020 after a fall in cargo miles. Cargo mile (CEU/NM) picked up quickly and look set to reach pre-pandemic levels soon, while live vessel number remain suppressed.
