Hansa tECH-Hub AUTONOMOUS VESSEL Wärtsilä equips »Mayflower« »Mayflower« is the name of one of the first fully auto nomous, unmanned ships in the world to cross the Atlantic. Wärtsilä has now joined a global consortium of technology partners behind the project, including IBM. Under the leadership of the research organisation ProMare, the project is developing autonomous systems that could be used commercially at a later stage. Wärtsilä contributes its RS24 system, a high-speed, high-resolution FMCW K-band radar (24 GHz) that is designed to provide a high degree of situational awareness – especially in dense marine areas. IBM is providing the artificial intelligence (AI), cloud and edge computing and power systems behind the ai captain of the ship that will enable it to »feel, think and make decisions at sea.« »Mayflower« is 15 m long and has a weight of only 5 t. Sea trials are scheduled for this summer. ABB Hybrid power for fish carrier As the first live fish carrier to feature ABB hybrid power and propulsion solution with integral energy storage, »Færøysund« responds to a wider green shift in the maritime industry, with consumers demanding greater accountability in the food supply chain. The 77 m-long diesel-electric vessel is being built at the Aas Mek. Verksted shipyard in Vestnes, Norway, for Nova Sea Service, one of Norway’s largest producers of Atlantic farmed salmon. Due for delivery in September 2021, »Færøysund« is Aas Mek. Verksted’s second newbuild for Nova Sea Service. According to ABB, batteries will enable ›peak shaving‹ when the ship is operating at high loads, optimizing the energy management and reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Stored energy will also be critical for fish life support, acting as a reserve, if required, in the event of power outage or blackout. In environmentally sensitive areas, stored energy, supported by clean shore power connected via ABB technology, will enable emission-free operation. The scope of supply consists of an electric, di gital and connected propulsion package comprised of two ACS 880 drives and two permanent magnet motors, the energy storage system including a battery pack, low voltage switchboards, and a power energy management system (PEMS). ABB is also overseeing all systems engineering, project management and commissioning, and will offer a full range of remote diagnostic services. the live fish carrier includes a 3,000 m3 load compartment which can be separated into two wells, and a pressure loading and unloading system. »AUTOSKY« BMW finances switch to biofuel Car maker BMW will bear part of the costs for a test run with bio-fuel on the car carrier »Autosky«, owned by the UECC shipping company. In March, fuel supplier GoodFuels and UECC had announced a three-month test with bio-fuel on the 140 m long car carrier. Now, major customer BMW has joined the team and will bear the additional costs during the project phase in proportion to its own cargo quota. The automobile manufacturer can significantly improve its CO2 footprint during transport in return. The participation of the BMW Group in this project is another important step on the way to biofuels and climate-friendly ships, GoodFuels announced. The financial contribution enables fuel deliveries to UECC to continue after the trial phase. The vessel commutes between the ports of Zeebrugge (Belgium) and Santander (Spain). The fuel used is based on cooking oil re sidues. It is practically free of sulfur oxide (SOx) and reduces CO2 by up to 90% compared to fossil fuels, GoodFuels says. 48 HANSA – International Maritime Journal 07 | 2020

Hansa tECH-Hub LUKOIL Navigo MCL Ultra fully approved Lukoil’s Navigo MCL Ultra, a 20 BN cylinder oil developed by Lukoil Marine Lubricants specifically for vessels operating in Emission Control Areas (ECA), remains one of few low BN cylinder oils that still have a valid ›No Objection Letter (NOL)‹ with all major OEMs. Recently, a leading OEM withdrew its approvals for almost all low BN oils in the market, while Navigo MCL Ultra has retained its status, and continues to be fully approved by all other major OEMs, the company stated. »To comply with emission regulations, ships in ECAs run on ultralow Sulphur fuel
