SCHIFFFAHRT | SHIPPINGThe world cruise fleet in 2025Cruise travel remains one of the fastest growing travel modes in the world. The largestships are becoming destinations in themselves, with even more onboard entertainment.Newbuilding activity rebounds as operators report record figures. By Arnulf HaderEarly February 2025 the World is watching how PresidentTrump will deal with the wars in Ukraine and the Holy Land, the impact of refuges on selections in several countries or of torrentialrains, storms and earthquakes on the politics, but the discussionabout climate change and emissions of cruise ships wasforced into the background. As long as some money is available, people want to make holidaysdisregarding the world politics. Due to the fact that ships canavoid dangerous regions, cruise travel is among the fastest growingtravel modes world-wide. The biggest ships are becoming adestination in themselves.2024 fleet reviewWhile the many orders signed before 2019 provided enough workfor the shipbuilders during the pandemic, nearly nothing wasnewly contracted. Therefore, the number of deliveries went downto only ten last year. All ten ships came from Fincantieri, Meyeror Atlantique. The smallest ships had a measurement of about50,000 gross tons, 100,000+ GT are now medium size and bigships with more than 4,000 or 5.000 beds are examples of contemporaryseries building. The average size of these new ships isabove 110,000 GT and 2,400 beds. Compared to 2023 the tonnageand capacity was smaller once more. The forecast for 2025 ismuch higher since 14 new ships are nearing completion andhardly any withdrawals are expected.2025 fleet forecastThis year about 50 % more capacity will be added to the fleet bynewbuilding activity. Worth mentioning especially are not thelargest ships but the »Asuka III«. She was ordered during the pandemicby a Japanese owner in Europe. Tui is expecting the »MeinSchiff Relax« from Fincantieri, the first of the largest-ever Tuiships. Meyer Turku is completing currently the »Star of the Seas«,sister vessel to the »Icon of the Seas«, the largest cruise ship ever. The Disney fleet will be augmented by two additions, one out ofthe actual series of Meyer Papenburg and the »Disney Adventure«,the former »Global Dream« ordered by the MalaysianGenting Group, which is being remodelled in the Wismar shipyardby Meyer people. The contribution from the Chinese Shipbuilding industry issmall this year: the expedition ship »Douglas Mawson« by ChinaMerchants Jinling shipyard. »Star Seeker« is out of the successfulseries of expedition ships of the Portuguese West Sea shipyardand the first which will not remain in the Mystic Group but issold to an American company.Newbuilding deliveries planned in 2025At the end of 2024 the total fleet comprised 370 ships with28.9 mill. GT and 707,700 beds. End 2025 it will include the 14new ships and one oldie which was retired years ago. Regardingthe optimism in the future cruise markets, many retirements arenot expected, but the fleet is getting older and a few mishaps inthe widest sense may happen. Under these assumptions the fleetreaches about 382 ships with 30.5 mill. GT and 740,000 beds atthe end of 2025. The increase of the average size keeps growingand nears 80,000 GT. The 2025 newbuildings will include twosmall expedition ships, but, nevertheless, the average size is morethan 120,000 GT and 2,600 beds. One year ago, the pandemic seemed to be over and optimismabout the development of the cruise market came back. The CarnivalGroup was the first to underline this turnaround by anorder for a big ship. Competitors followed soon and the orderbook was filled again. From 5.1 mill. GT and 114,000 beds oneyear ago, it rose to 7.8 mill. GT and 170,000 beds currently while1.1 mill. GT and 24,000 beds were delivered during 2024.The capacity of the fleet can be estimated until the end of theyear – the size of the order book is only known for the moment.Deliveries 2024Ship nameSun PrincessQueen AnneBrilliant LadySilver RayMein Schiff 7Utopia of the SeasIlmaExplora IIDisney TreasureViking VelaTOTAL: 10OperatorCarnival - Princess CruisesCarnival - Cunard LineVirgin VoyagesRCG - Silversea CruisesRCG - Tui CruisesRCG - Royal Caribbean CruiseRitz-Carlton YachtMSC - Explora JourneysDisney Cruise LineViking Ocean CruisesGT177,882114,188108,23255,051112,982236,47346,75063,621144,25653,7691,113,204Cabins2,1571,3971,4043641,4502,8342284611,246499Beds4,3142,7942,7627282,8945,6684489222,49299824,020Crew1,6001,2251,1505441,1002,2803746401,555465Delivered2024-022024-042024-042024-052024-062024-072024-072024-092024-102024-12ShipyardFincantieri-Monfal,Fincantieri-Margh,Fincantieri-SestriMeyer WerftMeyer-TurkuAtlantiqueAtlantiqueFincantieri Castell,Meyer WerftFincantieri-Ancona22 HANSA – International Maritime Journal 04 | 2025
