SHIPS MADE IN GERMANY

SHIPS MADE IN GERMANY TKMS Fourth Egyptian sub launched The fourth submarine in the HDW 209/1400mod class construction program has been launched and christened at the thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) shipyard in Kiel in late September 2020. In addition to maritime defense, these subs are designed for conflict prevention, surveillance and intelligence gathering, and special forces operations. The HDW Class 209/1400 mod-series submarines can remain submerged for long periods of time, their low signature makes them difficult to locate. The HDW class 209/1400mod is the most modern version of the HDW class 209 with over 60 boats built. The contract for the the first two units of this type for Egypt was signed in 2011. In 2015 the option for two more units was drawn. MEYER WERFT »Spirit of Adventure« and »Iona« delivered The »Spirit of Adventure«, the second cruise ship for the shipping company Saga Cruises, has been delivered from the Meyer Werft shipyard in late September 2020. The Corona crisis had caused delays to the project. Like her sister ship, »Spirit of Discovery«, the »Spirit of Adventure« is 236 m long and 31.2 m wide, and will offer space for 999 passengers. It features an eSiPod propulsion system from Siemens. Just about two weeks later, Meyer Werft delivered »Iona« to P&O Cruises. Originally scheduled for delivery in May, »Iona« had to prove its seaworthiness on several trials in the North Sea and pass extensive technical and nautical tests. The engine room module was built at the Neptun shipyard. The four low-emission Caterpillar dual-fuel engines can run on 100% LNG at sea and in port. »Iona« is the first of two new ships for the P&O Cruises brand. LÜRSSEN Yacht »Sheherazade« completed Lürssen has completed the 140 m long yacht »Scheherazade« in June 2020. Under the project name »Lightning«, the 140 m long and 23.8 m wide newbuilding was built in Bremen. The 10,000 GT mega yacht borrows its name from the fairy tales of »One Thousand and One Nights,« – possibly pointing to an owner from the Arabian region. Construction of the »Sheherazade,« which currently ranks 11th among the world’s largest yachts, had already begun in 2017. The yacht features two helipads on the forecastle and stern. A garage attached to the side on deck 4 houses a tender boat about 15 m long. The yacht is powered by two MTU 20V 1163 M84 diesel main engines with a total output of 11,203 kW. Lürrsen is currently working on various yacht projects beyond the 100-meter mark. 38 HANSA – International Maritime Journal 04 | 2021

ABEKING & RASMUSSEN Minehunters for Indonesia Abeking & Rasmussen has started construction of two minehunters for the Indonesian Navy in November 2020 at the shipyard in Lemwerder. The order is worth 204 mill. $. After just under a year’s design lead time, the 62-m boats are being built from non-magnetizable steel. A&R is one of only a few shipyards in the world that can process this special steel. The design is based on the German Navy’s Frankenthal-class and is to replace two Pulau Rengat-class boats, both of which entered service in 1988. The new minehunters are equipped with MAN 175D hybrid propulsion packages, each comprising two MAN 12V175D-MM engines (2,220 kW at 1,900 rpm), an MAN Alpha CPP twin screw-propeller system including Alphatronic 3000 propulsioncontrol system and an AKA hybrid PTI system for silent operation while minehunting. Mines can be identified and removed by underwater robots carried on board – remotely or autonomously. Both boats will be delivered to by May 2023. PELLA SIETAS Russian icebreaker laid down The keel of the icebreaker ordered from Pella Sietas in Hamburg for the Russian owner Rosmorport has been laid in October 2020. The ship is being built in 17 block sections. Due to EU action policies against Russia due to Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula, getting the order to Lower Elbe was no easy feat. But because the ship is a purely civilian project, it was possible after all. The shipbuilders in St. Petersburg are responsible for the design, and the ship is being built and equipped in Hamburg. Now it is the first icebreaker for polar regions to be built at the shipyard, the first ship for a Russian customer and the first project to be implemented in cooperation with the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping. The diesel-electric powered icebreaker is capable of sailing through ice 2.5 m thick. With an ice class of »Icebreaker7,« the newbuilding will be the most powerful unit in Rosmorport’s fleet of nonnuclear-powered icebreakers. The shipping company already has three 21900M class units in service with the vessels »Murmansk,« »Vladivostok« and »Novorossiysk.« The 18 MW newbuilding will not only be the fourth, but also the technically most modern and powerful ship of the class.
