Fassmer Fr. Fassmer 2020 award goes to Fr. Fassmer Berne-based shipyard Fr. Fassmer wins the 36th edition of HANSA’s »Ship of the year« award It is only the third time in the 36-year history of the award that a shipyard has been honoured in two consecutive years. For 2020, Fr. Fassmer will receive the title for building the »Hamburg« – a special ship for the German Maritime Search and Rescue Service (DGzRS). Even though it is not a particularly large ship that was built at the shipyard, the newbuilding is still considered a prestigious project whose creation caused quite a stir, not only because of the public competition for the name. Quite deliberately, the keel-laying did not take place at the shipyard, as is usually the case. Instead, the shipyard had brought the first section of the hull to the Alsterschifffahrt pier at Jungfernstieg in Hamburg. The newbuild »Hamburg« is the fourth unit of the 28 m class, the youngest and most modern type of sea rescue cruisers of the DGzRS fleet. The ships of this class are new constructions with a completely enclosed deckhouse and a multi-purpose room with on-board hospital separated from the mess. The elaborate hull construction made entirely of seawater-resistant aluminium is considered quite demanding from the shipbuilder’s perspective. In addition, the shipyard and the customer relied on a double, and in parts even triple, outer skin and the self-righting properties for which some DGzRS ships are known. The shipyard Fr. Fassmer had already received the Ship of the Year award last year. At that time, it was for the German research vessel »Atair« – the first in the german governmental fleet to be powered by LNG. The only two other shipyards, which were awarded two times in a row where Blohm+Voss in the early 1990s (for the megayachts »Lady Moura« and »Eco«) and Papenburg-based Meyer Werft for the cruise newbuildings »Aida Diva« and »Celebrity Solstice«. n HANSA – International Maritime Journal 04 | 2021 29
