In cooperation Icelandic shipping company Eimskip and Greenland-based Royal Arctic Line have contracted three 2,150 TEU vessels at Guangzhou Wenchong. Two firm vessels plus the option on the construction of three further ones go on the account of Eimskip, whereas Royal Arctic Line will take delivery of one vessel solely. The Deltamarin 2,300 type vessels are designed to have ice class 1A and will be built in accordance with the IMO´s polar code which came into effect January 1, 2017. Thus, they will be powered by a fuel effcient TIER III engine which has lower NO x-emissions. A built-in scrubber system will minimize SOx-output. The vessels are reported to cost approximately 32 mill. $ each. However, the orders are still subject to financing. Apart from that new building activity remained calm. In the post-panamax segment Korea Line owned SM Line bought five Hyundai 6,500 type vessels from Hanjin´s insolvency estate. The state-owned Korea Developement Bank put another ten vessels up for sale. Three quite young former panamax vessels were sold for 6.5 respectively 6.9 mill $. The size bracket between 2,000 and 3,000 TEU saw especially high activity. Here six ships changed hands. Further transactions took place below 2,000 TEU. However, the demolition market showed quite bustle. For this year´s containership recycling the 100,000-TEU-threshold was passed by mid-February already. After firming in the first five weeks of 2017 scrap prices declined marginally. By the time of writing (mid-February) the price for one light displacement ton of a container vessel was quoted around 315 $ (basis delivery at Alang area). This implies that the amount of recycled container ship tonnage could become as high as last year or could even surpass it.
