Schiffstechnik | Ship Technology ROLLS-ROYCE Ship equipment for the world’s largest tugs Rolls-Royce has signed a contract to deliver propulsion and deck machinery for 13 new tugs, including five which will have a direct bollard pull of around 150 t. The contract with Edison Chouest Offshore (ECO) is worth more than 38 mill. €. The tugs are being designed and built at Chouest-affliated U.S-shipyards. The five most powerful tugs will be 45 m long and 17 m wide, making them the world’s largest of their kind to date. Rolls-Royce scope of delivery includes both large azimuth thrusters and winch packages, enabling the tugs to effciently perform their main duties; general harbour assistance, braking or steering the vessel, or performing deep sea towing. Eight of the vessels ordered by ECO will be equipped with two US 255 Fixed Pitch thrusters, while five will have US 60 Controllable Pitch Propellers. All 13 vessels will be equipped with towing winches plus auxiliary winches, all based on lowpressure hydraulics. The five largest of the tugs are to be equipped with winches with dynamic towing capability in the full bollard pull range, this is instead of towing on static brake which is most common for these type of vessels. The dynamic towing capability of the low-pressure hydraulic reduces risk during a towing operation, and reduces wear and tear on tow gear. M RADIO HOLLAND Contract from Destini Destini Shipbuilding and Radio Holland agree on supply package Radio Holland Malaysia (RHM) has secured a contract from Destini Shipbuilding & Engineering for the supply of navigation and communication equipment on board of six New Generation Patrol Crafts (NGPC). The vessels are being built for the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA). The scope of work encompasses detailed design, supply, installation, testing and commissioning of the navigation and communication equipment including the steering system and thermal cameras. The vessels will play an important role in maritime search and rescue operations. Destini Shipbuilding and Engineering was convinced that Radio Holland Malaysia provided the most cost effective solution and competent engineering team to execute and complete the six projects. The Radio Holland Malaysia team is currently executing the equipment installation on board the vessels, ranging from Sailor, Jotron, Kelvin Hughes, Motorola, Simrad, SAAB, Skipper and FLIR equipment. For this project, the LARS was designed to carry a craft with a length of nearly 9 m, with a maximum weight of 6 t. For each vessel, the stern ramp was designed to carry two vessel launch systems, which were both powered by one hydraulic power unit. TBV says that by means of a creative team of engineers and its group of partners, the project for the Kuwait Coast Guard has successfully been commissioned to the satisfaction of the shipyard and the final customer. LSA SERVICE Deck Equipment Cost reductions with a wide range of pitches To offer shipowners and managers as much options of cost reductions as possible, German-based LSA service Gmbh focusses on different measures. For the »Independent Lifeboat Service and Testing Organization« (ILSTO), good maintainance is one part which increases the safety and reduces costs. A further aspect is that vessel crew becomes more familiar with the deck and lifesaving equipment. »Due to lack of this familiarization the safety aspect as actual needs to be improved and will automatic lay to reducing of maintenance costs or replacements of the parts which are out of order«, LSA service says. As certified ILSTO providers LSA could contribute to cost reductions for inspection and repair comparing to manufacturers’ inspection programs with high costs. »By servicing and inspection of all kind of makers’ and manufacturers’ equipment the knowledge of the engineers is brought on a high level and several systems can be compared.« According to LSA, another aspect of importance is regular operation of deck equipment, as a running system will not seize. For life raft automatic release gears, LSA offers non-expiry automatic release hook installation. There would be no »back and forwarding costs« arising and the hook could be serviced on the vessel during the five-yearly overhaul inspections. A topic to bear in mind would be the new implemented IMO 1392 rules. Due to this, the safety standard has come to the next level as well as confidence of the crews to use their life saving equipment. »As due to several flag state requirements these IMO 1392 rules have entered into force for single suspension rescue boat release gear. This has increased costs again as most hooks being of the on-load type and need to be changed for compliant or off-load hooks«, the Bassum-headquartered company says. LSA service had a certified and compliant Schiffstechnik | Ship Technology off-load hook in program with a non-expiry date, it was added. »This solution will reduce the maintenance costs either as several manufacturers are using the overhaul program with forwarding of the hooks to their workshops every five years. This is separate from the costs of a logistic operation with back and forwarding costs. M Photo: LSA SILOBAU THORWESTEN Flexibel.
